Some of my colleagues at Servita will tell you there is a fear gripping the public sector. There is fear of sending big transformation projects live in case they fail, fear of being branded wasteful and a fear of working with new suppliers in case they trip up.
Nobody wants to be the next Daily Mail headline, but equally no organisation can transform without being brave and bold. Fear really is holding back transformation projects.
For me, the answer is for public sector organisations to embrace the flexibility, agility and the willingness of SMEs to collaborate; guiding the customer to make the right changes whenever necessary and truly acting as a valued and trusted partner in their best interests.
SMEs can be agile. They’re not restricted by a rigidly enforced scope of work. They can help clients to get what they want rather than just ‘doing things to them’. This proactivity – of course – increases the likelihood of a project being right.
SMEs are far better at bringing the public sector with them on the transformation journey versus bigger firms. Smaller firms make a better job of understanding the nuances of a unit or department; they understand what it wants and feels.
I also think SMEs are far better at listening to their clients. At Servita, we convert what we hear and give it back to clients; we speak the same language as our clients and we try to take them on the journey with us. This is another good way of reducing the fear.
I, like many of our team, was brought up on major programmes, large and complex transformations that were fraught with challenges and competing priorities. Our people are the best in the industry. They are smart and deeply experienced. What also sets them apart is their desire to be challenged, to constantly learn and overcome problems.
This sees us make a business of running towards the biggest, most complex programmes when others run in the other direction. We’ve become very good at it, and we see a growing demand, because whilst our customers are comfortable delivering small, more straightforward programmes, they need our help when it’s big and complex.
Servita is an international IT-enabled business transformation company. We specialise in the delivery of complex, large-scale business transformation programmes. We’re committed to helping the public sector transform in the most efficient and most effective way.
We’re here to make your ambition a reality.
